Adventure Overview
Step into a Sahara few ever see—where time is written in stone and silence tells its own story. This journey leads you through ancient dunes, secret oases, and deep canyons where water still flows. Along the way, you’ll uncover rock art older than history, meet Tuareg guardians of the desert, and walk paths shaped by wind and time. Each night ends beneath a sky so full of stars, it feels like sleeping inside a story.
Itinerary
We begin our adventure in the vast dunes of the Erg Admer, heading to Tegharghart to admire the famous “Crying Cow” engraving, a 7,000-year-old masterpiece of Neolithic art.
Amidst the golden dunes, we reach Iherir, a hidden oasis and UNESCO-listed Biosphere Reserve. This lush valley, the region’s only permanent water source, offers a striking contrast to the surrounding desert.
We explore Idharen, a historic village where nomads once gathered, and continue to Tin Taghirt to observe remarkable Neolithic rock engravings, including the famous gazelle from Algeria’s 1,000-dinar banknote.
A scenic hike through Essendilène Canyon leads us to a stunning emerald guelta hidden among towering cliffs. Along the way, we visit a nomadic village and experience Tuareg hospitality.
In Tikoubaouine, we marvel at an elephant-shaped sandstone arch and explore ancient rock paintings depicting Neolithic life, revealing stories of the region’s distant past.
We traverse a surreal landscape of towering rock formations, where nature has sculpted a breathtaking “stone forest.” At sunset, the desert glows in golden hues before the night sky unveils a dazzling display of stars.
Our journey ends in Djanet, where we explore its historic center and vibrant market filled with Tuareg crafts. Before departure, we refresh with a shower and enjoy a final night camping under the desert sky.
